Noodles in Zhongxiao Fuxing

31 Oct

Finding a cheap restaurant in Zhongxiao fuxing is quite difficult i think. You can find a lot of trendy places and western restaurants, but when you don’t want to spend too much on a diner or you’re just hungry enough, it’s quite difficult. However i managed to find a little place selling noodles. The cook was really nice, he gave me some extra food freely (maybe because i was a foreigner). I tried some big noodles that i had never seen before, and they were ok. Howver the fish balls were not really good. And the pickles were nice too. But for 80TWD compared to the 160TWD coffee i had just a street behind, it’s pretty good.

Coffee Bun at Baker’s boy

25 Sep

I wanted to try this bun for a week now, but since it’s quite far from the university, i had to wait. So, i tried…and it was disappointing. It didn’t taste like coffe at all.

I bought one that just got out of the oven, so it was really hot and burning, that’s cool. But the inside is empty, there’s only a thin layer of some cream (in fact i don’t konw if this is the bun dough that’s not cooked or a cream). It’s sweet, smells sugar, and that’s all. No coffee taste at all. And i made a 45 minutes trip for this…

I tried the Brioche and a “sablé”, a simple one with butter (again in the description in the shop, i recognized “milk”, as if it was something healthy…).

The sablé was nice, but i would have baked it a little longer i guess. Otherwise the taste is great, you can smell the butter but not too much, and the sugar too on the border of the biscuit. Nice but not unforgettable.

The Brioche was with chocolate and orange peels. I didn’t expect the orange peels, but it was really nice. The flavor is here again, but it was starting to dry a little at each end of the brioche, so maybe add a little butter and also make it softer.

In the end, the shop is quite like in Paris (good but not awesome), except that the bread is twice as expensive as in France (100TWD) and that the “baguette” is more expensive than unconventional breads like the curcuma or olive ones (that’s quite strange…). You also can find some Taiwanese bakeries i guess because they sell strange flavors that you can’t find in France shops.
However, their almond croissants look awful. I even wonder how they can present it to customers. It doesn’t look like croissant at all, just likea cake that was too cooked and you can’t even find the croissant shape.

Of another funny thing! They sell brioche that looks exactly like “biscotte” (continental toast)! We were looking at them and my friend was saying that she needed some for her breakfast, so she took it, and was surprised to find it was a brioche!

It’s quite expensive for here, so once it’s a while it’s ok. It cost me 210 TWD for one little bread, 1 brioche and one biscuit.

Cold Stone Creamery & Capatina Ice creams

18 Sep

It was really hot, i was hungry and i wanted to try some ice cream. Hum, my bad. I tried 2 ice creams from 2 different shops since i was disappointed by the first one. Unfortunately for me, the second was even worse.

The first one i tried, from Cold Stone Creamery, was supposed to be banana, vanilla ice-cream and whipping cream. Banana: 1/6 of a banana. whipping cream: 1/4 of a tea spoon, vanilla ice-cream: 1/2 of a scoop. You will not die because you eat too much with that. And it was pretty expensive compare to what it was. The taste was ok, i mean, like fast food ice-cream: not great ice-cream but with the mix it’s not what matters, but  not a really good quality/price ratio.

The second one, from Capatina is suposed to make italian ice-creams, so i was hoping for some quality. The lemon sorbet didn’t taste anything. Only water and if you really concentrate yourself you can taste the lemon. But you really have to concentrate really hard. That’s a shame because lemon sorbet is easy to make and doesn’t cost a lot. It was the same for the passion fruit sorbet. They have the colors, but that’s all. Not even worth another try.

I noticed something while i was eating my ice-creams. People don’t eat the waffles of their ice-cream. They all leave it. I know that they don’t really enjoy crispy/crunchy things (you can’t find crispy bread, only loaf and bun, meat is often in soup and with a lot of fat so you don’t have really anything hard to eat, and they mainly only have creamy chiffon cakes as cakes!). So when i was eating my crispy waffle, everyone was looking at me.
