Marco Polo – Shangri-La

26 May

So far my favorite lounge in Taipei is on the 38th floor of the Shangri-La hotel. There is an amazing view on Taipei 101, the cocktails are good and with a lot of flavors i like (i would like to try them all in one night but well, that would be quite bad). I’ve been there 5 or 6 times so far, and it’s pretty nice. The only thing is that it’s a little too dark at night, but that’s better for the view. It’s nice to go there to see the sunset before going to a restaurant or at night before going to a night club, even though for the nightclub, the W bar has a better vibe. It all depends if you want to cool down and stay in a cozy environment, or if you want to get excited and in a more fashionable place. I personally prefer the Marco Polo for the first option.

Just the elevator of the W hotel makes me sick, and the waitresses there look kinda…. too sexy? i would say. I also saw that a W just opened in Paris.

On wednesday i tried a vanilla espresso and yesterday i went for a “apricot mango”. I’ve also tried the Dr. Evil and Bird of Paradise. I love cocktail names, it’s always so beautiful.

香宫 Shang Palace – Shangri-La

I was invited to a Chinese and Cantonese restaurant, supposely to be one of the best of the city when it comes to dim sum. However we went there for Chinese food. I’m not a real Chinese food lover and my friend wanted me to change my mind.

We started with a Pu’er tea from Yunnan, and some beans as appetizers.

For the main dishes, we had  fried rice with crab meat and purple rice, beef, roasted duck, hot and sour shrimp soup, and some beef.As for the dessert, it was some steamed black sesame buns.

I’m really not an expert when it comes to Chinese food, but the purple rice was the better i ever had. I need to know how to cook this. The roasted duck was really different from the one i had in Beijing, it was nice but i still prefer the real Beijing duck with the crepes. The beef was really tender and in nice slices (not small pieces of beef with only fat like you often find). The soup wasn’t really spicy and had a nice flavor. I’m still not used to the thickness of some Chinese soups but so far it was the best i had in Taiwan.

For the dessert, the steamed bun were nice. I like sesame because it has a pretty strong flavor and not too sweet. It’s a pity we can’t find more pastries with sesame in France.

Then we went to a nice bar that a friend told us about. You can see her blog here. She takes amazing pictures so if you want some to see the real thing about Taiwan, go and see her. Anyway, i took one of her pictures because my camera didn’t work since it was too dark.
The bar was at the 38th floor of the Shangri La hotel, and have an amazing view on the city and Taipei 101. The cocktail were not that good for some of my friends (mojitos and long island ice tea, which i thought was nice because it wasn’t too sweet and a little bit sour, but maybe that’s because i really don’t know anything at cocktails.).
But the one we took with another friend was awesome: Bird of Paradise: Baileys, banana cream, Tia Maria, milk, cinammon, and maybe grenadine, i can’t remember. Delicious but too small!

The view is worth coming, and the environment is nice and cosy. Count around 450 TWD for a cocktail.
