Pineapple-Bouddha’s hair fruit

4 Jan

This isn’t a bouddha’s hair fruit. I was given this fruit which is a mix between pineapple and bouddha’s hair. The taste is really really seet, and it’s delicious. What’s cool is that you don’t have as many seed as the bouddha’s hair, but still you have a similar taste and it’s easier to eat. Yum yum! I’m gonna miss this fruit back home.

I asked for the best Taiwanese Bakery, and the people at the I-house gave me this one. At least it’s the most famous, after for the taste, as there’re so many bakeries, it’s quite difficult to judge. Anyway, there were a lot of people there. It’s nearly like a factory!
Because in Taiwan, if you have guests or if you need to offer something to business partners, or just other people, Pineapple cakes are the best thing. So of course you have a lot of people coming.

I tried the Pineapple cake (they have a lot of different ones, but the most famous and typical is the Pineapple one, so!). It was great because it wasn’t too sweet compare with some other i already had, and the dough wasn’t as crumbly neither. Really good.

Then i picked my favorite Taiwanese traditional pastry after the Pineapple cake the Sun cake! I hate Moon cakes but i like Sun cakes. It’s a little bit like “frangipane” (not as good but it helps to wait for January). Again a lot of layers and it’s hard to eat, but it was good.

Then i tried for the first time the Milk cake. It’s pretty much the same as the Sun cake, except the filling inside, that i find too heavy. I prefer the Sun cake.

They also have jujube cakes, rasperry cakes, melon ones, red been, moon cakes, almond cookies…

Mom’s Pie – NCCU delivery

24 Nov

Since today i finished my exam and wasn’t really happy about the Chinese one, i decided that i needed something sweet. And, lucky me, tiday is Thanksgiving day. So the “famous” pie seller around the university that usually only comes on Tuesday and Thursday from 3pm to 8pm stayed longer today. I was finally able to taste these pies that everyone talk about in the area and that taipei food blogs also know. I was then expecting much about these. I was quite disappointed.

I chose 3 (i’ve been wanting to try them for 3 months now, so of course, i had to try several!): Pinapple coconut cheesecake, coffee cheesecake and strawberry banana pie. I must say that was the first time that i remember eating a cheesecake (i ate once in NYC but i can’t remember the taste, so..). I think that i just don’t like the cake in itself, because both cheesecake weren’t that good. I mean, it’s easy, you can’t really taste the fruit or coffee flavors and i don’t really enjoy this texture that’s creamy but heavy and too much cheese flavor. That’s the cake in itself that i don’t like, so i can’t really judge it, since that’s also my first time eating one.

However the strawberry banana pie was ok. Not exceptional though. I will not travel around the city to get one, and i don’t think i’ll buy another neither. I ate 3 and i was still hungry as if i hadn’t eaten anything! It’s still too “American like” dessert, which are usually not my cup of tea, except a few sweets.

Pineapple Biscuit

22 Sep

Someone gave me this traditional biscuit, so of course i had to taste it! After being disappointed by their dessert so far, i had to tried biscuits to see if it was better (for a westerner point of view).

The biscuit in itself isn’t salted at all and less dry that our biscuits. It is also less sweet and more friable. The inside is like some fruit paste, really sweet, so it compensate the bland taste of the biscuit. However, it doesn’t really taste like pineapple. It’s really sweet, a little bit too much so it overcomes the taste. But so far that’s the best Taiwanese biscuit i have eaten, so i still have hopes!

Next time i will try to buy some brioche, because they use a special flavor that makes it a lot more softer, so i want to try.
