Like beef noodles, but with black pork! The broth is with pepper, pork, green onion, carrots. So actually it also has a taste very similar with the western broth.
I’ve been in Taiwan for 9 months now and i still hadn’t tried Taiwanese most famous dish with Stinky Tofu, the Beef Noodles. Some students told me that a shop around the campus is supposed to be one of the best of the city, so i decided to take beef noodles in take-away.
I have to say first that i am a pasta lover, but Italian pasta, not asian ones. And this dish didn’t change my mind. You have a lot of soup, a broth with cabbage, carrot, beef. It has more flavor than the one i tried but there is always a special taste that you find everywhere in the soups or juicy things, i don’t know what it is, but i’m a little bored to taste it all the time.
What i like is that you have real beef pieces inside, that’s really nice. And it’s not only fat as in some other restaurants. The noodles are nice, but have less flavor than the italian ones. The size overall is quite big, but if you don’t drink the soup, you leave half of the dish, so it’s ok.
Another kind of take-away. Noodles. I wanted some cheap thing, here it goes: 35TWD. They’re called Typical Taiwanese noodles.
I know that fat is usually the thing that gives taste, but i think that even though the shop might have heard that their noodles didn’t taste like anything, only putting fat instead of meat isn’t that nice. Well, for 35TWD i shouldn’t expect much, but still that’s a little bit a bother. This was ok once, but next time i’ll try the dumplings in another shop.
In Shida, the night market excluded, you can find a lot of places to eat. So we tried this one woth some friends.
The specialty there was fried noodles. There were different than the one we have near the university but still i had already tried those big noodles in a soup last time. So it was not a big surprise. They were ok, but not that amazing, not too oily and there were some vegetables, which was great.
The onion pancake was bad. That’s one of my favorite thing here (and also one of the first thing i tried when i arrived). But this one was too oily, without much onion inside, and too chewy. Not good.
In the end, that’s a nice restaurant if you want original fried noodles to change once in a while, but that’s not THE place to eat in the area and the noodles in themselves are quite plain concerning taste.
Benjamin brought me to his favorite noodle restaurant called Baobao (in the small street on the right side from the main gate).
They’re good at dumplings and i tried his favorite dish, with was a spicy seafood noodle soup. And he made me try Pork’s ears (yeah, i tried Pork’s ear and ate cartilage!).
The dumplings were good, i liked them. The soup was really spicy but nice too. Just the noodles really looked like spaghettis, so it was a little bit strange, but it was nice. And well, the pork’s ears…if you don’t try cartilage it’s ok, just like normal meat, but i really don’t like the crispy side of the bones. Benjamin bought the ears so next time it’ll be my treat! My favorite is still the left hand restaurant and the korean one, but this one is good if you want dumplings!
Finding a cheap restaurant in Zhongxiao fuxing is quite difficult i think. You can find a lot of trendy places and western restaurants, but when you don’t want to spend too much on a diner or you’re just hungry enough, it’s quite difficult. However i managed to find a little place selling noodles. The cook was really nice, he gave me some extra food freely (maybe because i was a foreigner). I tried some big noodles that i had never seen before, and they were ok. Howver the fish balls were not really good. And the pickles were nice too. But for 80TWD compared to the 160TWD coffee i had just a street behind, it’s pretty good.
I found my new take-away place. The cook is just amazing. Just looking at him is already a show. He uses a wok and never stops, even when he put fire so high that the flame is taller than him. His dexterity is really impressive. I must take a video next time.I stand in front of him for more than 15mn waiting for my food, but i didn’t get bored at all watching him.
This place is in the small street near NCCU, so foreign students don’t seem to go there often. However it’s really cheap (i had this for 50 TWD) and that’s delicious.
