Mom’s Pie 2

25 Apr

Cranberries cheesecake
Not well-balanced: the cheesecake was too salted which made the cranberries “jam” even sweeter. So the overall was too sweet.

Peach pie
the dough wasn’t enough cook (i don’t know why this one in pertuclar, but the dough was horrible because of that. Then it’ syrup peach, so the flavor isn’t as good as with real ones.

Oatmeal pie
I was quite surptised by it, it’s my favorite of them. A nice flavor and the dough was cooked enough.

Coconut pie
This one is ok, except that i don’t really enjoy the coconut inside which is translucid…

NCCU – Another Japanese Restaurant

12 Apr

Japanese restaurants are the most popular ones around NCCU, or at least you have a lot. This time we tried a new one. It’s nice because you have a lot of choice concerning sushi and maki including vegetarian rolls, californian and philadelphia ones. You can also have a Don if you really don’t like fish and want something hot.

I chose a menu, with 5 suhi and 6 maki and one handroll. The sushi and maki are ok, the fish is a little too hot i think. I prefer it when the fish is still a little bit fresh, and even though you can’t cut it with your tongue, it’s still some really soft one, which i like. The nori however is a little too chewy to be really fresh. I have to say that i prefer this one to the one in Taipei 101 though.

Vegetable Place – NCCU

20 Dec

Finally! After 4 months at NCCU, i finally found a place where you can get vegetables only and not oily (a miracle, believe me!). Because vegetables here seem to be unknowned by Taiwanese. I mean, you have noodles, rice, soup, but if you want only vegetables without oil, so far i only found the stewed take-away stands, and they only have cabbage or broccoli. So if you want some choice, well, that’s too bad for you but you won’t eat. Or you can have salads, but salads in winter…
I know i’m late to find restaurants (everyone seem surprised that i only tried a very few restaurants so far)

My dream right now is my parents “Ratatouille”: a lot of veggies!

So, anyway, back to the restaurant. You have a lot of choice concerning vegetables: spinach, pepper, cabbage, mash potato, beans, green beans, cauliflore, carrots, cucumber, boiled dim sum… welle everything that’s perfect for me. Ok, the spinach are a little too cooked, the cuncumbers too salted, but well, i can bear it if it’s for vegetables. The mash potato is really strange though: sweet, with eggs, carrots and corns inside (i think that’s what makes it sweet), and this for only 48TWD, which is the price of an apple with a jujube (so this is far better).

Garlic Bread at the 1rst bakery – NCCU

25 Sep

Salad without bread= impossible for me, so i tried to find some decent bread near NCCU, and the only bakery that proposes some real bread is the first one starting from NCCU main gate. You have 2 breads: the baguette which is really big (for 2 or 3 person at least) of the garlic bread, smaller, which is great for one meal. I went for this one.

The weather unfortunately makes it too soft for a crispy bread. It’s quite oily, but like all garlic bread i guess. However the taste is good, it reminds me of my first garlic bread in Australia. So it’s good if you want bread and not the time to go far. Just don’t expect a crispy bread.

Salted toast & Slice of Bun at the 2nd bakery – NCCU

25 Sep

Since nearly all the restaurants are closed after 2:30, i tried to find something salty at the bakery, and chose a toast. This one has green onion, bechamel, bacon, and parsley. Actually i was really surprised by it. It was really good, with a little of pepper, the bread was crispy and soft in the middle. I think that’s because of the flour that they use and that’s differnet from Europe. Anyway, i really loved it and it was perfect for dinner. I think i will try again somehting there.

Then i tried a slice of their bun. My god, it was soooo soft! It melted in the mouth. And there was this flavor that i also tasted in some Japanese breads, but that i never found in France and that i loved. It’s really addictive. They don’t have really good dessert, but when it comes to buns (what they call bread but that look like buns), they’re really good. I prefered this one to Eric Kayser’s one, even if they’re totally different, this one is more what i expect of a bun.

This is the second bakery on the left starting from NCCU main gate.

MOS Burger – Rice Burger

22 Sep

I finally tried the rice burger, famous in Asia but that we don’t have in Europe unfortunately. So i went to the most famous fast-food around here (Mc Do excluded), MOS Burger, the Japanese chain to have this burger.

Just for my personal data, i looked at the kcal before on the website to compare with a big mac for example. The one i chose was the less fat one (excepting the vegetarian one, but only mushrooms…not my piece of cake) which is only 305kcal, so if you compare with a 500kcal Big Mac, that’s quite low. The other rice burgers are around 500kcal too, so i guess that rice instead of bun doesn’t change anything.

My chose a japanese burger, with beef meat like in Sukiyaki (which i loooove~). And the meat was delicious! I really liked it, and with the lettuce and the salad it was quite good and you feel full, not like after a Mc Do meal. So yeah, i prefer MOS Burger so far, rice hamburgers rock! I want one in France!

Again, the service is in 2 parts here: you first pay, get a number, go to your seat, and a waiter bring the burgers. Quite cool, you only have to wait for the -long- queue when it’s lunch time.
