Lawry’s

20 May

I was invited to this steakhouse which was pretty hard to find actually since it’s in the basement of a company building. What was funny is that if you say that’s your birthday, you can get a free dessert, so we saw not less than 3 birthday during the evening. Outside that, we chose the smallest meat piece (for diet they said), a 6oz steak which was already huge, like twice as big as what you usually get in a French restaurant. The room is pretty big and tried to be classy however the outfits of the waiters and cook ruin the all so it turns out to be a comical and quirky place.

The corn weren’t that good, too creamy, same for the spinach. Actually it was more cream with spinach than spinach with cream. The purée was good and handmade. The steak a little too hard and with too many nerves. Expensive and not that good compared to the meat from the Teppanyaki i tried last time. Fortunately we had a good wine, a Bordeaux Supérieur Lafite Monteil that we finished before the meat arrived.

Pierre Marcolini

29 Dec

Yesterday as i was walking on the streets i saw that Pierre Marcolini had a shop in the area. As i didn’t know him before Christmas thanks to his beautiful “bûches” and chocolates that where everywhere on food blogs and other websites, i decided to go for a try today.

I bought 12  milk chocolates and one small white chocolate bar, and a small gift for friends as i always eat their bread. Hum, be ready to empty your wallet: 2700TWD for this. But god dammit, that was so delicious.

For the small chocolates, i chose:
Thé Earl Grey: nice and light
Thé Citron: this one is really nice, you really have a strong flavor or the lemon
Safran: this one i wasn’t that impressed and i don’t think it was really special
Mangue: the mango flavor comes at last, and it’s quite refreshing. However i would have like the mango taste a little bit stronger
Fleur d’oranger: it was like eating a Maghrebian pastry. Really nice, one of my favorite
Palet Or Lait: ok, this one is just a killer: caramel, vanilla, just everything that i love…
Calin Lait: this one also is delicious, with caramel, “dentelle de quimper” for the crispy part, and vanilla.
Caramel fondant: with melted salted caramel. Well it’s just awesome, i can’t say more. I just love caramel and this one was nicely salted.
Quatre épices: this one is impressive, because you really feel like eating a ginger bread. Really strange and nice.
Rose: i am not fond of this one, maybe it is because i think rose flavor is too chemical.
Ginger: nice and fresh. Chocolate ginger is always a nice mix i think.
Café Cardamone: the coffee taste was here (i can’t even  to the Godiva truffle where i couldn’t taste it).

The white chocolate is really nice: you can really feel the vanilla. But maybe i would have put a little less salt, because a part of it was quite salty i think.

If you want a sweet treat with chocolate, i can only recommend you this place. So far there are one of the best chocolates i ever had. However, it’s really expensive and small for the price. But good quality often means small size too. My favorites are the ones with caramel, but you should try the quatre épices and fleur d’oranger for something unusual.

Cloudy Cupake

10 Dec

Cupcakes. The first i really try. I’m not usually fond of those cakes, but i had to try some at least. So I picked the coffee one, and a French custard (to not say lemon custard).

The lemon one is quite nice, even though i think that the cream is too heavy (but i think that’s normal, i mean it’s like American chantilly which is a way heavier than French one).

The coffee one however is an absolute not good. It doesn’t taste like coffee at all. Really disappointed by this one.

In the end, if you want a sweet treat, you can try the fruit ones i guess, that’s ok.Count around 70 TWD for a cupcake.

Hielo

2 Dec

Yogourt ice-cream is pretty popular in Taiwan. Here is another brand, Hielo, which proposes 0% fat yogourt ice-creams. What is great is that you have the choice between a waffle ice-cream and a cupcake one. I chose the cupcake one, which a lot of fruits (called Kate). You can also make your own ice-cream if you prefer. I prefer this one to Yogourt, the ice-cream taste less like yogourt.

Count around 150 TWD for one cupcake hielo.

When i start to get in lack of French Pastries, i become a real bother to people around me. So, i went to a French bakery get my shot of sugar (yeah despite the name, it’s French: a Japanese baker that studied in France and has his shop there).

I started with a “quiche lorraine” and a cold Mocha tea. A funny thing in Taiwan in general, is that when they say that you have salad with your dish, they mean ONE leaf of salad. Don’t expect a proper salad. It just doesn’t exist. Then i tried the “Tarte caramel au beurre salé” (salted butter caramel pie)and the “éclair au caramel”, to stay in the same taste. (and then i went to another bakery to eat other sweet things)

Quiche of the day: not that great, the egg taste is too stong i think. Then you nearly don’t have any “lardons” and potatoes are also lacking. So it’s more an egg quiche. However the pastry is really good.

Tarte caramel au beurre salé: that’s good. The caramel is really great, salted enough and the thin chocolate mousse softens the taste. The pastry is nice too and crispy enough.
The éclair au caramel: ok, they made a mistake. Not about the pastry, but the service. They gave me the pastry that just came out the fridge. I didn’t ask for a frozen éclair. They should at least know the basic knowledge of the 15 minutes out of the fridge before serving. When i first tried it, the cream inside was too cold and the puff pastry really hard. I had to wait a bit, but still i can’t wait 15 minutes doing nothing in front of the pastry. It’s ok but the “Des Gâteaux et du Pain” religieuse is a way better. The puff pastry isn’t really to my taste, i found it too dry and hard (maybe because it was still cold).
Mocha cold tea: so weird. I’m not a tea drinker, so i don’t know anything about tea, but this is really strange. A little bit sour, really green…I’m still trying to figuring out if i like it or not.

It was nice to find some good French pastries, but unfortunately those two were the only one i wanted to try, so i need to find something else for next time.

Count 800 TWD for this.
