New Hama – Teppanyaki

9 May

I was invited to New Hama, a Japanese restaurant in Zhongxiao Dunhua area.

The restaurant is located in the basement, but it’s really large and a little classy but in the Chinese way i would say. As an appetizer, we had some raw veggies with sauce, and a some pumkin soup, really creamy. You can choose between a pumpkin and an onion soup. The garlic butter bread given with it was horrible though. I think i’ve never tasted a bread as bad as this. Too dry, tasteless. However it was the only bad thing of the diner.

Then we had some fish with fried onions. The fish was really good and at the perfect temperature, warm but not hot, and the veggies were not too greezy as they often are, which usually make them tasteless. Here they were cooked but a little and not in a liquid.

Then we had scallops (I think it was, i didn’t recognize the word in English) and a mushroom. The scallops were also nicely cooked, but they had a really different taste, softer than usual. I prefered these one.
Then a salad, you can choose your sauce. If I want to be picky, i would say tha again, that’s not a real salad, but i totally gave up on eating a proper salad in Taiwan. That’s just not possible.

And the main dish, Australian steak. Sooooo good! I miss meat so much here, and this one was delicious! I mean, teppanyaki is a really good way to cook meat, but this one was really really good. With yellow wasabi, soy sauce and onions, that was to kill for.

If you can, go there. But that’s not cheap: the minimum is 2,400NTD.

Also, I tried a new product. You like whisky, tea and don’t like having a headache the next morning after drinking?
Then you should like Onore King, which is a brand that produces a whisky based on tea (but ou actually don’t feel the tea) and with which you can’t have headache the next day, even though you drank a bottle. It’s pretty strong, but it’s quite good.

Sun Fog restaurant

9 May

The restaurant had a really nice view over the lake, which was really cool to see the sunset and eat at the same time. It’s also just out of the town, so it’s calmer and better to relax. The food was ok. We had a soup with clamps and green onion, a fish, some fried shrimps a little too salted, and some green veggies. My favorite goes for for the mushrooms and onion with ginger in a sauce that was really nice.

NCCU – Beef Noodles

9 May

I’ve been in Taiwan for 9 months now and i still hadn’t tried Taiwanese most famous dish with Stinky Tofu, the Beef Noodles. Some students told me that a shop around the campus is supposed to be one of the best of the city, so i decided to take beef noodles in take-away.

I have to  say first that i am a pasta lover, but Italian pasta, not asian ones. And this dish didn’t change my mind. You have a lot of soup, a broth with cabbage, carrot, beef. It has more flavor than the one i tried but there is always a special taste that you find everywhere in the soups or juicy things, i don’t know what it is, but i’m a little bored to taste it all the time.
What i like is that you have real beef pieces inside, that’s really nice. And it’s not only fat as in some other restaurants. The noodles are nice, but have less flavor than the italian ones. The size overall is quite big, but if you don’t drink the soup, you leave half of the dish, so it’s ok.

Idea: Thai Tart

8 May

Since i came back from Thaïland, i am addicted to mango sticky rice. So i thought: how about making a tart version of it?

I want to try to make this as soon as i have a kitchen (aka in 4 months…). I don’t really know the terms, and if it would be good, but i really want to give it a shot!

It would be a vanilla dough, with roasted mango with vanille, a coconut- lime cream, a rice and condensed milk mousse, a white chocolate cover and a mango vanilla coulis/coconut-lime coulis on the top.

The problem is with the mousse…I’m not really convinced it would be possible to do this. But i should try when i can.

Sweet tea 2

7 May

I finally got the see the new shop of Jean-Paul Hévin in Taipei 101. It doesn’t seem to have open yet, but i’ll definetely try it.

This week in Sweet tea, i tried the small lemon cake and its candied lemon, the strawberry jam financier, the apple tatin tart and the sugar tart.

The small lemon cake is nice, but nos as good as the on of Pierre Hermé. Indeed, you have this lemon flavor and the candied lemon is very nice, but it’s a little too dry and heavy compared to PH lemon cake, so it’s more difficult to eat an dnot as enjoyable. Howver the taste is really good. It just depends what you’re looking at when you eat a cake. I would put it between Pierre Hermé and Des gâteaux & du pain in second position.

Then, the strawberry jam financier. The jam is delicious, one of the best i’ve eaten, you feel the strawberries under you teeth and the flavor is really strong, it’s totally different from the industrial ones. However i prefer the mix almond-caramel than almond-strawberry jam.

The sugar tart. I didn’t know what it was first, but in the end it’s a big “palmier” but in a tart shape. The outside is a little crispy and the inside is soft. It’s sugar, for sure, there’s like asugar syrop that makes it impossible to cut the tart. It’s a really good “palmier”, but i am not perticularly fond of this viennoiserie.

The apple tatin with a vanilla whipped cream quenelle. Again the vanilla cream has this different taste (i would swear there is alchool in it but it’s impossible) which i don’t really enjoy. The apple tatin is really nice. You can feel the apples and the caramel which is not too strong and doesn’t overcome the apple flavor. The apple are not too cooked and purée-like which i like. I just wonder what kind of dough they used because it seems different than the usual puff pastry, but maybe that’s becaue of the way of cooking it…

Overall, i prefered last week fruit tart and caramel financier.

Bunny Listens to the music – 兔子聽音樂

2 May

I wanted to try this restaurant since i arrived, now it’s thing done. It’s an italian restaurant, with risotto and pasta, but you can also have australian beef and some nice fishes.

I chose the Pan-fried snapper with leek and apple kala mansi sauce. What i like there is that for 220 NTD more, you have a soup, a salad, a dessert and tea/coffee offered. The tomatoe salmon soup wastypically an asian version of western soup, with cabbage and carrots. I’m not really fond of seafood soup, so i would have prefered it without the salmon or the seafod broth.

The service is pretty quick and customers are served at the same time (normal in Europe, but definetely not here), which is quite nice.
The salad had the “asian dressing”. I think that they use a different vinegar, that’s why.

My main dish was really nice. However the cauliflower was not cooked enough (between raw and cooked), as well as the broccoli. The purée was nice, not too sticky, but the potatoes would have been more crashed, it would have been even better. The sauce and fish were really nice though, with salt and pepper, just well cooked. I also loved it because it’s well presented, you don’t have too much, the perfect size, and it’s healthy. As for the dessert, they got it from La boîte de bijou, the one i’ve already been. Actually Bunny Listens to the music is the “salty” version of Boite de bijou.I picked a mapple syrop mousse and mascarpone cream dessert, which was pretty nice but not as good as sweet tea. The white chocolate on the top was too sweet. The mapple syrop flavor was nice, but i think there was too much mascarpone cream. Otherwise the insert was nice, just like the biscuit.

Count around 480NTD for the main dish, and add 220ND if you want a soup, salad and desert with a drink.
