Mangos are Back!

22 May

Finally, after a loooong wait, i can see the “food event” i was waiting for coming. Mangos are back in the fruit shops. One thing that really differs here from home is that i only buy fruits from fruit shops and thus i follow the fruit seasons (of Taiwan, because at home i never find strawberries in winter, even if it’s imported). So mangos, dragon fruits, persimmons disapeared last year without a word, and i was pretty excited to see the mangos back. Dragon fruits are usually in mid-june, as for presimmons, i’m not sure yet.

So, i was so happy that i bought 3 types of mangos: the green and small one (size of an apple), the red one from Taiwan (twice bigger than the green one), and my fav that you can find in Thaïland as well, the yellow one (twice bigger than the red one).

The green one has the stronger flavor, it’s also the less sweet one, followed by the red and the yellow, that doesn’t taste like mango as well. I still haven’t found the type of mango that we have at home and that i dislike as it’s even less sweeter than the green one.

Rice in banana leaf

20 May

A xiaochi i tried for lunch. It’s rice filled with pork here, and the all is in a banana leaf. Lucky me, there were ants in mine. It’s quite heavy and oily and the meat was only fat. Not really good, but it can be good, i just need to find the right place to buy it.

NCCU – Dumplings

20 May

A shop selling dumplings at 5NTD the dumpling (around 0,12€ the dumpling). I tried the Korean spicy one, the curry one and the original pork one. Curry isn’t really good, so i stuck with the pork and the korean one. That’s not amazing, but it’s really cheap.

Sweet tea 4

20 May

I tried the salted part of Sweet tea, the Vegetarian fougasse. I liked the filling because it’s like a ratatouille with pepper, eggplant…cooked in olive oil with basilica, so that was just delicious. However the bread…i prefer the one from Lalos.

Continuing with the sweet part, the cookies were nice, but even though they’re good in flavor, i think that they lack in terms of melting. I love subway cookies because they’re hard on the outside and melting in the middle. Here they’re crispy, that’s good, but not melting. So it’s still not perfect to me.

Finally, i tried the last cake, the candied fruit one. I didn’t noticed but yeah, fruit without “s”, and that’s true. Only one grape. They’re really kidding me. A fruit cake with one single grape in the whole cake. Ok, it’s the same size as a madeleine, but still! And it’s not even breath-taking. That’s a total waste of money.

Penghu small restaurant

20 May

A small restaurant we tried before going to see the firework. The fried pork rib was only for 75NTD, and not too oily (trust me, even if that’s only oil, there is a difference between oily and too oily), which was nice. The veggies were good with a different cabbage. Ok and cheap. Why ask for more.

On a right alley from the main street Zhongzheng in Magong on Penghu island.

Lawry’s

20 May

I was invited to this steakhouse which was pretty hard to find actually since it’s in the basement of a company building. What was funny is that if you say that’s your birthday, you can get a free dessert, so we saw not less than 3 birthday during the evening. Outside that, we chose the smallest meat piece (for diet they said), a 6oz steak which was already huge, like twice as big as what you usually get in a French restaurant. The room is pretty big and tried to be classy however the outfits of the waiters and cook ruin the all so it turns out to be a comical and quirky place.

The corn weren’t that good, too creamy, same for the spinach. Actually it was more cream with spinach than spinach with cream. The purée was good and handmade. The steak a little too hard and with too many nerves. Expensive and not that good compared to the meat from the Teppanyaki i tried last time. Fortunately we had a good wine, a Bordeaux Supérieur Lafite Monteil that we finished before the meat arrived.

Mr Brown Coffee Shop

20 May

Before taking the plane, i went to a coffee shop that is pretty famous over here and sells coffee: Mr Brown. You can easily find coffee cans everywhere from convenient stores to restaurants. I tried the macadamia nuts coffee latte, and i loved the latte art. The flavor is also nice, better than starbucks i think. I didn’t try their real espresso which is the real way to know if a coffee is good to me, but this one was nice and it’s an original flavor.
