7-eleven: Western Chocolate Cake

24 Nov

When i decide that a day is going to be unhealthy, well, it will really be, so to continue after the cheesecakes, i went to get a chocolate bum from 7-eleven. Not western-like at all, it’s more like a chiffon cake with a thin little chocolate cream in the middle. So far that’s the most chocolated thing i’ve tasted in the area, as here everything “with chocolate” actually means “without chocolate taste”. Light, that’s not bad, i actually prefer it over the chocolate cake i tried in the first bakery.

Mom’s Pie – NCCU delivery

24 Nov

Since today i finished my exam and wasn’t really happy about the Chinese one, i decided that i needed something sweet. And, lucky me, tiday is Thanksgiving day. So the “famous” pie seller around the university that usually only comes on Tuesday and Thursday from 3pm to 8pm stayed longer today. I was finally able to taste these pies that everyone talk about in the area and that taipei food blogs also know. I was then expecting much about these. I was quite disappointed.

I chose 3 (i’ve been wanting to try them for 3 months now, so of course, i had to try several!): Pinapple coconut cheesecake, coffee cheesecake and strawberry banana pie. I must say that was the first time that i remember eating a cheesecake (i ate once in NYC but i can’t remember the taste, so..). I think that i just don’t like the cake in itself, because both cheesecake weren’t that good. I mean, it’s easy, you can’t really taste the fruit or coffee flavors and i don’t really enjoy this texture that’s creamy but heavy and too much cheese flavor. That’s the cake in itself that i don’t like, so i can’t really judge it, since that’s also my first time eating one.

However the strawberry banana pie was ok. Not exceptional though. I will not travel around the city to get one, and i don’t think i’ll buy another neither. I ate 3 and i was still hungry as if i hadn’t eaten anything! It’s still too “American like” dessert, which are usually not my cup of tea, except a few sweets.

Lalos 3

23 Nov

Another try!

I wanted to try some other breads, but i usually want to eat special bread with a specific dish. Olive ciabatta had to go with Olive oil Tomato-Mozzarella dish. I can’t easily find ciabatta in bakeries in France so i don’t know much about this bread. It’s quite soft, but delicious with olive oil.

The nut bread had to go with goat cheese. The outside is crispy as it should be, and you have a nice flavor of nuts. I loved it. It’s better than the honey bread. I’m really glad to have found this bakery.

The marbré cake was a little too heavy for me. It’s better to buy it slice by slice, it’s lighter and less dry. Not the best cake ever. Lalos is definetely for bread and not desserts.

Wendel’s bakery

20 Nov

Oh oh oh, Christmas spirit is not dead! In some shop, you can feel it! And particularly in this German bakery called Wendel that i spotted on a hungry girl’s website and that i wanted to try. We went there to eat some cakes: delicious. It’s more the ” homemade” type, so don’t expect refined pastries, but you have delicious good cakes including rhubard pie, apple pie, marbré, chocolate cake, rasperry chocolate crumble, vanilla crumble, opera, ginger bread, Stollen, banana cake… You also have a wide range of real bread and bretzels.

Their marbré is really good, tender (happy butter!), and their chocolate cake not heavy at all despite its look. Actually i don’t know which one i prefer between Lalos and Wendel. Maybe Lalos is more refined and with a little stronger chocolate taste and a little bit drier, and this one is softer. So it’s not really the same. I love them both. Rhubard pie is not strong enough in rhubard for me, i usually like the bitterness in it, but here the pastry was to thick for it and with nuts so the rhubarb wasn’t that strong.

I couldn’t resist to buy a ginger bread (but look at it, it’s so cute, how can you possibly resist to that!). That’s my first time eating ginger bread like this (but i wanted something to remind me Christmas!) and it’s nice. The cinammon taste isn’t that strong, the biscuit isn’t too hard neither and not chewy as i was scared it would be. Nice one, but not my favorite cake ever.

The bakery can become a restaurant, so if you want to eat German that’s also a possibility.
You can count around 80 TWD for a piece of cake.

Then we went to a nice bar that a friend told us about. You can see her blog here. She takes amazing pictures so if you want some to see the real thing about Taiwan, go and see her. Anyway, i took one of her pictures because my camera didn’t work since it was too dark.
The bar was at the 38th floor of the Shangri La hotel, and have an amazing view on the city and Taipei 101. The cocktail were not that good for some of my friends (mojitos and long island ice tea, which i thought was nice because it wasn’t too sweet and a little bit sour, but maybe that’s because i really don’t know anything at cocktails.).
But the one we took with another friend was awesome: Bird of Paradise: Baileys, banana cream, Tia Maria, milk, cinammon, and maybe grenadine, i can’t remember. Delicious but too small!

The view is worth coming, and the environment is nice and cosy. Count around 450 TWD for a cocktail.

Macho Tacos

20 Nov

We went there with some friends. The restaurant is actually more like a fast food, but the food is quite nice. It tastes like real Mexican food. Tacos were crispy, with lettuce and tomatoes, and my burrito was nice. You czn choose the type of beans, rice and the sauce you want. However the sauces weren’t to my like, but well. And i drank soda for the first time after a year: i still think that’s not good, but that has nothing to do with the place! So that’s a nice restaurant.

牛老大- Chef Beef Noodles

18 Nov

In Shida, the night market excluded, you can find a lot of places to eat. So we tried this one woth some friends.
The specialty there was fried noodles. There were different than the one we have near the university but still i had already tried those big noodles in a soup last time. So it was not a big surprise. They were ok, but not that amazing, not too oily and there were some vegetables, which was great.
The onion pancake was bad. That’s one of my favorite thing here (and also one of the first thing i tried when i arrived). But this one was too oily, without much onion inside, and too chewy. Not good.

In the end, that’s a nice restaurant if you want original fried noodles to change once in a while, but that’s not THE place to eat in the area and the noodles in themselves are quite plain concerning taste.
