The green Pear: Goyava

22 Sep

Another fruit. Again. I’ve got a serious problem. My budget for fruit is quite important. Indeed, each time i go to the grocery, i buy around 7 fruits, telling myself that i’ll eat one fruit a day. However, just arrived in my room i’m already drooling thinking about which fruit i’m gonna try. So it never last more than 3 days…

Anyway, i tried this one, which looks pretty much like a pear and taste quite the same. I think though that it wasn’t mature, because it taste like a non-mature pear: hard, not sweet, and without a lot of taste. Not that good. So maybe i will have to try another one. But that’s after i’ve tried everything. I talked with other people and learned it was Goyava. So far the persimmon is still my first.

MOS Burger – Rice Burger

22 Sep

I finally tried the rice burger, famous in Asia but that we don’t have in Europe unfortunately. So i went to the most famous fast-food around here (Mc Do excluded), MOS Burger, the Japanese chain to have this burger.

Just for my personal data, i looked at the kcal before on the website to compare with a big mac for example. The one i chose was the less fat one (excepting the vegetarian one, but only mushrooms…not my piece of cake) which is only 305kcal, so if you compare with a 500kcal Big Mac, that’s quite low. The other rice burgers are around 500kcal too, so i guess that rice instead of bun doesn’t change anything.

My chose a japanese burger, with beef meat like in Sukiyaki (which i loooove~). And the meat was delicious! I really liked it, and with the lettuce and the salad it was quite good and you feel full, not like after a Mc Do meal. So yeah, i prefer MOS Burger so far, rice hamburgers rock! I want one in France!

Again, the service is in 2 parts here: you first pay, get a number, go to your seat, and a waiter bring the burgers. Quite cool, you only have to wait for the -long- queue when it’s lunch time.

Pineapple Biscuit

22 Sep

Someone gave me this traditional biscuit, so of course i had to taste it! After being disappointed by their dessert so far, i had to tried biscuits to see if it was better (for a westerner point of view).

The biscuit in itself isn’t salted at all and less dry that our biscuits. It is also less sweet and more friable. The inside is like some fruit paste, really sweet, so it compensate the bland taste of the biscuit. However, it doesn’t really taste like pineapple. It’s really sweet, a little bit too much so it overcomes the taste. But so far that’s the best Taiwanese biscuit i have eaten, so i still have hopes!

Next time i will try to buy some brioche, because they use a special flavor that makes it a lot more softer, so i want to try.

Din Tai Fung

22 Sep

One of my friends had a diner with a Taiwanese girl learning French, so i asked her if i could join them. It ended up that they were going to the restaurant I really wanted to go since I arrived, the famous Din Tai Fung. This restaurant is actually a chain, and they’re in a lot of different countries. You can even find 2 of them in the States and they’re supposed to make the best xiao long bao (dumplings). So imagine my happiness when I learned that we were going there!

We went to the Taipei 101 branch, and tried their pork xiao long bao (the most famous one), some with vegetables. To eat it, you have to pour 1 spoon of soy sauce for 3 spoons of vinegar, add ginger. First, you put your xiao long bao in your spoon, then you pierce it so that the juice flows in your spoon. You drink the juice, and then eat your xiao long bao with the sauce!

The pork ones were really good, but I already had better dumplings in China. It was really better than Kitchen Pucci because the dough is a lot thinner, and the dumpling juicier. So yeah, that were good dumplings. Besides that, we tried some Rou Bao: chicken bao, pork bao and vegetables bao. The pork one was the better. In fact, I don’t really enjoy their vegetable when it comes to filling. They are delicious when you eat them alone, but inside some dough, it’s not that good. The Bao were really good, with a lot of meat inside compared to the one I had for breakfast last time.
So far Din Tai Fung is my best dumpling restaurant in Taiwan. However, it’s also more expensive. For 3, you should count around 1000TWD.
